Welcome to Sycamore Class!
Sycamore Class contains Year 3 and 4 children. Our class teacher is Mrs Maloney and we are supported by Ms Barnes.
Moving into key stage 2, the children begin to become more independent in their work. Our classroom is full of resources that children can choose to use to support their learning. Spellings and timetables are practised daily and we follow White Rose Maths. We love building on what we have found out in key stage one to expand our knowledge and also taking on the new challenge of learning French.
Mrs Maloney can be contacted on amaloney@thornton-in-craven.n-yorks.sch.uk
Reading
Children pick two books to read. The first is selected from the Accelerated Reader scheme. They will choose a book that interests them and once they have read the book, they complete an online quiz to check their understanding. Their second book is chosen from our class library.
Continuing to share books with your child is important. This maybe something you wish to do with their class library book, a library book, another book from home or one of the books shown on the links below.
Times Tables
We work hard through years 3 and 4 to have quick recall of times table facts. By learning these steadily in logical steps over the two years, we are ready for the Year 4 times table test but more importantly have an vital skill for life. Short, daily practise at home makes all the difference. We find Times Tables Rock Stars: Play (ttrockstars.com) and White Rose One Minute app really helpful for this.
Homework
Homework is set half termly. Your child will be given a homework grid where they can select a minimum of four pieces to complete throughout the half term - they can complete more if they wish! Completed homework should be shared with the teacher and it will be celebrated in class.
School Planners
All children have a school planner that should come to school each day. It contains key information to help your child with their learning and should also be used a communication method between home and school. These are checked daily, and any questions/queries will be dealt with accordingly.
Our Learning
Have a look and see what we’ve been up to this half term.
To support our learning in Geography (Malham-How can we be a good tourist?) and science (Rocks) this term we went on a fieldwork trip to Malham. We walked up to Malham Cove in the morning following routes that we had previously planned in school and learned how the limestone cliff was formed. On the way back into the village we interviewed tourists about their reasons for visiting Malham and after lunch we carried out a traffic survey to help estimate how any visitors were in Malham. Despite the dancing through the rain drops all day, there wasn't a single moan. We had a fantastic time and learnt lots thanks to Rebecca Swift and her team from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Education Office.
P.E.
We have a PE session every week on a Monday and Tuesday their PE kit should be in school to take part in this
We all took part in a cross country event between local school. It took resilience to get up that final hill!!
